Strait Challenge 2017

Post by patxikiter » Sun May 14, 2017 10:08 am

The Dufour 385 Kaa Hee Stevia will be there

Less than 30 days for the STRAIT CHALLENGE 2017 / JOSEBA EGUIDAZU MEMORIAL.

A new edition of one of the most complicated races of the Andalusian calendar, the STRAIT CHALLENGE 2017 / JOSEBA EGUIDAZU MEMORIAL regatta, hopes to gather more than 40 boats from different parts of the Spanish Coast, such as Ibiza, Melilla, Cadiz, Huelva or Ceuta. The strait is the only connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, which makes navigation in these waters very difficult because of its great currents and strong winds from east or west.

The Regata Strait Challenge, 2 seas 2 continents, joins the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, Algeciras, Tarifa and the Autonomous City of Ceuta, that year after year it turns with its hospitality towards all the sailors, being totally involved in its organization to through the Vendaval Club of Ceuta and with the Royal Nautical Club of Algeciras and Activesea.

The Strait Challenge 2017 is for the fourth year high level test of the Andalusian Championship of Height Cruising, a bet by Active Sea and the Real Club Nautico de Algeciras.

This regatta will start next Friday June 10 at 10 am from the cove of Getares (Algeciras) to the Punta Paloma area in Tarifa where they will take a beacon to arrive at the port of Ceuta. The next day, a test of approximation will be made from the port of Ceuta to the cove of Getares, when it will be determined at the end of the same, the winner of the 2017 edition.

We want to pay tribute to Joseba Eguidazu, former president of the Real Club Nautico de Algeciras and one of the main promoters of this Regata Strait Challenge, which unfortunately left a great void between all the sailors and sailors in the Campo de Gibraltar.

After a great regatta weekend, the first day was a 40 miles offshore regatta, we had to cross the strait of gibraltar twice. the starts was easy, with about 8 knots increasing when aproaching to Tarifa, easterly winds of 30 knots gusting 41. It wasn't bad due to there wasn't big waves. very flat. we broke two genoa ropes and the G3 in the top, we had to sail with it about 2 hours, decreasing our speed. At last we were 3rd in ORC 3 of 15 boats.

The 2nd day was very bad for us. with 12 knots we don't know how to be fast. we did a good start arriving 6th in real time of 35 boats, to CLEAR BUOY about 1 mile and then 14 miles upwind to Algeciras, getting an 8th position, being 5th after the 2 days regatta.

I hope you like
