Dufour 34 – PHRF #

Post by Bruce3477 » Mon May 16, 2011 8:52 am

While is very difficult to determine relative PHRF #’s, yacht-on-yacht and in small local fleets, the USA PHRF ** database provides a lot of information.
The basic PHRF rating and factors are:
Standard Dufour 34 hull / std mast #117/sec/mile
Performance mast/sails upgrade -6 sec/mile
Or
Oversize main/oversize spinnaker -6 sec/mil
Basic D34 Peformance #111 sec/mile
Adjustments:
Roller furling genoa + 6 sec/mile
Cruising amenities +3 sec/mile
<140% LP genoa +6 sec/mile
Dufour 34 Performance – factory boat #126 sec/mile *
The closest volume production yacht in USA, would be the J-27 with 155% genoa at #126. i.e. The D-34 Performance and J-27 should rate about equal in the grand scheme of things..
When compare the Dufour 34 Performance under IRC at about 0.982 and the J-27 at about 0.935, the spread does not make sense relative to the USA PHRF data, with a spread of 0.047 / approx 5%.
However, IRC does treat the dayboats (such as J-27) very ‘kindly’, so in effect the spread for similar heavier keelboats should be closer to 3%...
But, the Irish ECHO (“PHRF’d IRC”) rating/handicap at about 0.948 for D-34 Performance vs. IRC at about 0.982, would be very much in line with the USA PHRF information detailed above.
*Note that the above data would be for original 2003 -2008 standard build, and includes the 40th Anniversary Edition. The later Dufour 34E with lighter build etc, would rate a bit faster…
** US PHRF of SE Florida.
